Home Depot Co-Founder Pledges To Give Away Most Of His Billions

Atlanta billionaire Bernie Marcus is worth a fortune and now he says he’s planning to donate 80% to 90% of his money to charity when he dies. The 90-year-old co-founder of Home Depot has already given over $2-billion to hundreds of organizations during his life, but he and his wife, Billi, joined the Giving Pledge launched by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, which is a commitment by the world’s wealthiest people to donate at least half of their fortunes.

Marcus has declined to give his net worth or say how much he’ll be giving away, but his fortune is estimated to be between $4.53-billion and $5.8-billion. Over the years, Marcus and his wife have donated $250-million to build the Georgia Aquarium and millions to the Marcus Autism Center in Atlanta.

“Every day of my life, there are new challenges for me that I want to get involved with,” Marcus explains.
